I have been weaving with fiber for seven years. I started weaving on a rigid heddle, a small and very portable loom. When I found the weaving classes at Wesleyan Potters, I knew that I had to investigate what they had to offer. I have been thoroughly impressed with the depth of knowledge and experience of my co-weavers and instructors.
My first introduction to weaving was on a little potholder kit that all kids had in the ‘60s. Not long after that, I started helping my dad with various forms of seat weaving. When I was in my teens, I took a couple of caning and shaker tape chair weaving classes and have since rehabbed many chairs that were destined for the curb. Many years later, my neighbor introduced me to the floor loom. That is when I started looking for weaving classes.
I love the versatility of the floor looms. You can make anything from lace to rugs, skinny fashion scarves to full sized blankets, using anything from silk to heavy wool. I am still investigating the various weave structures, but I keep going back to variations on double weave.
In addition to weaving, I love watching Textiles and Tea, kayaking, growing tropical plants, gardening, and hanging out with my dog. I plan to extend part of my garden to incorporate plants for dying and structure.
